Local Treasures: Eoropie Beach & Play Park

Eoropie Beach is roughly a 10-15 minute walk from the Decca (or a 2-minute drive). It is a huge beach with giant sand dunes and the award-winning Eoropie Dunes Play Park for kids of all ages.

Check out the images below to get a sense of its beauty.

The large sandy beach and play park are great places to let the kids run, but do be aware that the surf (lots of big Atlantic rollers) and the currents can be very strong here. If you’re looking for a good beach to swim in, consider Port Stoth (our family’s favourite swimming beach) or Port of Ness beach. Both are within 1.5 miles of the Decca and have parking access.

As with every beach in the world, there are safety precautions that are important to understand. Please see our beach safety information below.

Parking & Accessibility

If you don’t want to walk, there is a car park (near the play park) at the beach.

Please note, even if you park in the car park, you will still have to walk a bit to get to the ocean: either through the dunes (the scenic route) or over the grass on the machair. It’s not the easiest beach to get to for people with mobility challenges.

There are toilets in the playwark, but they are ONLY open seasonally. Their facebook page has more information, as this varies during school time. Currently it’s open (along with a snack kiosk) Monday through Saturday from 11am-4pm, but again, please check their fb page for more info.
